Meaningful Ways to Be Patriotic

The 4th of July is when we celebrate the independence our nation achieved over 200 years ago in 1776. Along with lots of hot dogs, sparklers, backyard get-togethers, parades, and fireworks, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate patriotism. Below is a list of fun and simple patriotic activities you can do to show your patriotism on the 4th of July as well as every other day of the year, brought to you by Shotwell Floral.

7 Ways to Show Your Patriotism

Celebrate!

Go out and celebrate the 4th with friends, family, and neighbors. Enjoy the hot dogs, refreshing beverages, outdoor games, and fireworks. Display red, white, and blue tableware, streamers, and miscellaneous decor items along with fresh floral arrangements in red, white, and blue to elevate the patriotism and elegance of any party.

Attend a Patriotic Parade

Towns across the nation typically put on an Independence Day parade to celebrate service members, veterans, and military families who have served our country. Take your family to enjoy the spectacle of marching bands, decorative floats, and an abundance of patriotic pride.

Support a Veteran

Offer your time or services to help a veteran in your community by mowing their lawn, running errands, or providing transportation. Or, send them a thoughtful gift basket of food and fresh flowers to lift their spirits.   If you’d like to know about how you can assist a veteran, contact your local VA facility.

Fly the Stars and Stripes

Hang the American flag from your front porch, house, or in your yard on a pole. Just make sure it is displayed correctly. For example, torn and tattered flags should not be hung, the American flag should fly above all other flags on the same pole, and if the flag is displayed at nighttime, it must be illuminated.

Visit a National Park or Historic Landmark

America’s National Parks are some of the most beautiful and well-maintained parks in the world. Often operating on a shoe-string budget, you can support the parks by visiting them, joining their organization, or donating. And don’t forget about our nation’s landmarks and monuments — they commemorate natural wonders and historically important sites, which are sure to fill you with awe and American pride.

Shop Local & Buy American

Support your community, your local economy, and the nation’s economy overall by shopping locally-owned businesses and Made-in-America products as often as possible. Putting money back into your own neighborhood is one of the most patriotic things you can do.

Display Patriotic Blooms

Show your patriotism by planting red, white, and blue flowers in your yard or hanging decorative planters in this trio of patriotic colors on your front porch. Bring a beautiful floral arrangement in red, white, and blue into your home to celebrate the 4th, or gift them to the host of a party you will be attending. Send patriotic blooms to military families, veterans, or a service member you know to brighten their day. Besides the traditional red, white, and blue blooms, select flowers that have specific patriotic symbolism, such as:

  • Roses – America’s national flower
  • Freesias – a symbol of freedom
  • Edelweiss – signifies strength and courage
  • Guernsey Lilies –  represent freedom and good fortune
  • Black-Eyed Susans – symbolize justice.

Displaying patriotism is easy and fun to do, whether for a particular day or all year round. For all your 4th of July celebrations or any occasion that calls for flowers, Shotwell Floral is the place to go for the freshest, longest-lasting, high-quality blooms.
